Important conjunctions in Portuguese

Oi! Tudo bem?

Do you sometimes think your sentences are way too short and you can’t elaborate your ideas very well? Perhaps the solution to your problems has one word: conjunctions. We need to use conjunctions to link sentences or else we would only make simple and boring sentences. Compare the following examples and notice how the second example flows much better:

No conjunctions:
Ano passado eu fui à Paris. Eu visitei lugares incríveis. Eu e meu marido
comemos comida francesa. Nós gostamos bastante.

(Last year I went to Paris. I visited amazing places. My husband and I ate French food. We liked it a lot)

With conjunctions:
Ano passado eu fui à Paris e visitei lugares incríveis. Eu e meu marido
comemos comida francesa, então nós gostamos bastante.

(Last year I went to Paris and visited amazing places. My husband and I ate French food, so we liked it a lot.)

Let’s learn some common conjunctions:

Examples:
1) Eu amo chocolate e pizza (I love chocolate and pizza)
2) Nós ouvimos rock e também pop (We listen to rock and also pop music)
3) Ou você compra um celular da Apple ou da Samsung (You either buy a phone from Apple or Samsung)
4) Você não pode nem usar o celular nem o computador (You can neither use your phone not your computer)
5) Eu estou doente porque eu saí na chuva (I’m sick because I went out in the rain)
6) Eu estou doente por causa da chuva (I’m sick because of the rain)
7) Devido ao Covid, nós não podemos viajar (Due to Covid, we can’t travel)
8) Como eu trabalho o dia todo, eu chego muito cansado em casa (As I work all day long, I arrive home very tired)

We can also use some transition words that will make your stories sound more interesting :

Now let’s practise! Answer these questions in the comments section and try to use as many conjunctions or transition words as possible:

a) O que você gosta de comer no final de semana? (What do you like eating on the weekend?)

b) Como é um dia típico pra você? (What’s a typical day to you?)

c) O que você fez ontem? (What did you do yesterday?)

d) Descreva o último filme que você assistiu (Describe the last film you saw)

e) Pense em uma história engraçada que aconteceu com você (Think of a funny story that has happened to you)

Até mais!
